Compassion Meditation for Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): a Nonrandomized Study.
Compassion meditation (CM) is a contemplative practice that is intended to cultivate the ability to extend and sustain compassion toward self and others. Although research documents the benefits of CM in healthy populations, its use in the context of psychopathology is largely unexamined. The purpose of this study was to refine and initially evaluate a CM protocol, Cognitively Based Compassion Training (CBCT®), for use with Veterans with PTSD. To this end, our research team developed and refined a manualized protocol, CBCT-Vet, over 4 sets of groups involving 36 Veterans. This protocol was delivered in 8-10 sessions, each lasting 90-120 min and led by a CBCT®-trained clinical psychologist. Quantitative and qualitative data were used to identify areas to be improved and to assess change that occurred during the treatment period. Based on pooled data from this series of groups, CM appears to be acceptable to Veterans with PTSD. Group participation was associated with reduced symptoms of PTSD (partial eta squared = .27) and depression (partial eta squared = .19), but causality should not be inferred given the nonrandomized design. No change was observed in additional outcomes, including positive emotion and social connectedness. The results of this open trial support additional exploration of CM as part of the recovery process for Veterans with PTSD
Personality and games : enhancing online surveys through gamification
In this research, we evaluate the moderating role of personality on enjoyment and attention associated with a gamified data collection instrument, and the attractiveness of a surveying organization. In an online experiment, we compare a gamified survey with a traditional survey. The results suggest that gamified surveys are more enjoyable and users are more attentive when filling out gamified surveys. Specific personality traits moderate the effect of attention and enjoyment related to gamification, and the enjoyment associated with gamification increases the attractiveness of a surveying organization. These findings have theoretical and practical implications to improve the design of existing online surveys

Herschel observations of interstellar chloronium
Using the Herschel Space Observatory's Heterodyne Instrument for the
Far-Infrared (HIFI), we have observed para-chloronium (H2Cl+) toward six
sources in the Galaxy. We detected interstellar chloronium absorption in
foreground molecular clouds along the sight-lines to the bright submillimeter
continuum sources Sgr A (+50 km/s cloud) and W31C. Both the para-H2-35Cl+ and
para-H2-37Cl+ isotopologues were detected, through observations of their
1(11)-0(00) transitions at rest frequencies of 485.42 and 484.23 GHz,
respectively. For an assumed ortho-to-para ratio of 3, the observed optical
depths imply that chloronium accounts for ~ 4 - 12% of chlorine nuclei in the
gas phase. We detected interstellar chloronium emission from two sources in the
Orion Molecular Cloud 1: the Orion Bar photodissociation region and the Orion
South condensation. For an assumed ortho-to-para ratio of 3 for chloronium, the
observed emission line fluxes imply total beam-averaged column densities of ~
2.0E+13 cm-2 and ~ 1.2E+13 cm-2, respectively, for chloronium in these two
sources. We obtained upper limits on the para-H2-35Cl+ line strengths toward H2
Peak 1 in the Orion Molecular cloud and toward the massive young star AFGL
2591. The chloronium abundances inferred in this study are typically at least a
factor ~10 larger than the predictions of steady-state theoretical models for
the chemistry of interstellar molecules containing chlorine. Several
explanations for this discrepancy were investigated, but none has proven
satisfactory, and thus the large observed abundances of chloronium remain
puzzling.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Mitral annular disjunction in myxomatous mitral valve disease: a relevant abnormality recognizable by transthoracic echocardiography
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mitral annular disjunction (MAD) consists of an altered spatial relation between the left atrial wall, the attachment of the mitral leaflets, and the top of the left ventricular (LV) free wall, manifested as a wide separation between the atrial wall-mitral valve junction and the top of the LV free wall. Originally described in association with myxomatous mitral valve disease, this abnormality was recently revisited by a surgical group that pointed its relevance for mitral valve reparability. The aims of this study were to investigate the echocardiographic prevalence of mitral annular disjunction in patients with myxomatous mitral valve disease, and to characterize the clinical profile and echocardiographic features of these patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We evaluated 38 patients with myxomatous mitral valve disease (mean age 57 ± 15 years; 18 females) and used standard transthoracic echocardiography for measuring the MAD. Mitral annular function, assessed by end-diastolic and end-systolic annular diameters, was compared between patients with and without MAD. We compared the incidence of arrhythmias in a subset of 21 patients studied with 24-hour Holter monitoring.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>MAD was present in 21 (55%) patients (mean length: 7.4 ± 8.7 mm), and was more common in women (61% vs 38% in men; p = 0.047). MAD patients more frequently presented chest pain (43% vs 12% in the absence of MAD; p = 0.07). Mitral annular function was significantly impaired in patients with MAD in whom the mitral annular diameter was paradoxically larger in systole than in diastole: the diastolic-to-systolic mitral annular diameter difference was -4,6 ± 4,7 mm in these patients vs 3,4 ± 1,1 mm in those without MAD (p < 0.001). The severity of MAD significantly correlated with the occurrence of non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) on Holter monitoring: MAD›8.5 mm was a strong predictor for (NSVT), (area under ROC curve = 0.74 (95% CI, 0.5-0.9); sensitivity 67%, specificity 83%). There were no differences between groups regarding functional class, severity of mitral regurgitation, LV volumes, and LV systolic function.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>MAD is a common finding in myxomatous mitral valve disease patients, easily recognizable by transthoracic echocardiography. It is more prevalent in women and often associated with chest pain. MAD significantly disturbs mitral annular function and when severe predicts the occurrence of NSVT.</p
The psychological syndrome associated with Long-COVID: A study protocol
IntroductionChronic post-viral syndromes, including Long-COVID, are characterized by a range of persistent symptoms that occur following a viral infection. Psychological symptoms are prevalent in Long-COVID patients and can have a significant impact on their quality of life. However, the specific patterns of psychological symptoms, their associations with physical symptoms, and the factors predicting their severity remain poorly understood.AimsThis study aims to explore and systematically assess psychological symptoms in Long-COVID, to identify syndrome clusters based on these symptoms, to examine their relationship with physical symptoms, and to investigate the influence of pandemic-related variables.MethodsDescriptive, cross-sectional study with data collected through an online questionnaire across several EU countries, from February 2020 to December 2022. Participants were recruited using public relations, the social media and information campaigns directed at the public and health professionals using snowball sampling.ResultsThe findings will allow to phenotype Long-COVID related psychological symptom clusters based on self-reports. facilitating improved assessment and treatment approaches.ConclusionsThe results will provide important knowledge for the public health management of the public healh management of Long COVID. The findings will contribute to a better understanding of the psychological symptoms associated with Long-COVID and the development of specific treatment guidelines for psychological burden associated with Long-COVID, thereby supporting management strategies to combat the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life
